what we do

Scouts movement

Not every child or youth likes the same thing. Our award winning programmes and projects provide a wide range of activities for them to choose from. A number of challenges contribute to their growth and advancement through the Scouting programmes and others are specifically designed to appeal to their interests.

Meerkats (5-6) follow the Meerkat trail where they learn new skills, play educational games and take on challenges divided into a number of themes. This Early Childhood Development programme was developed to address a direct need in our communities.

Cubs (7-10) follow the Cub trail where they learn new skills, play games, complete creative crafts, enjoy fun camps and community projects,. Along their journey they make new friends and acquire a number of badges.

Scouts (11-17) are guided by the Scout Trail. This adventure trail includes a wide range of activities such as hiking, camping, abseiling, swimming, survival skills, first aid or even flying! Scouting is an awesome and creative way to have fun, meet new people and active outdoors while exploring the world around you!

I started as a cub in 37th Springvale in 1977. We met in the original chicken shed on Springvale egg farm!! I then became a scout in 37th in Eagle patrol. We first met at Dr Weier’s plot in Erasmia. In 1982 we moved into the garage of Mrs Cathy Gons in Wierdapark and remained there until the current clubhouse was built. We had so many fundraising events in order to build that brick by brick. By the time we left, the new building hadn’t been built yet. The 3 original patrols were Eagle, Lion, Springbok and later Cheetah. I became PL of Eagle Patrol, Jacques Goosen was PL of Springbok, Riaan (cant remember surname) was Cheetah and Charles Muller was Lions. Myself, Jacques and Riaan became TL’s in 1985 and in 1986 we became 37th’s very first Springbok Scouts and had the honor of putting the first 3 Springbok badges on the troop flag (dead centre, under the scout badge). Our Scout Master was David Padbury who is an amazing and inspirational man. His wife Jean was Akala. Dave took us out of the suburb and into the veld. We camped every single weekend. Dave was a Selous Scout in Rhodesia and a Major in the SA Special Forces. We had the best veldcraft teacher. With Dave, was Raymond van Rooyen as Assistant Scout Master. A tough but fair childhood friend and an awesome ASM We won many awards under Dave and Raymond’s watch. Taking us from a small, friday night only troop to a force to be reconed with. I left 37th in 1987 as myself, Jacques and Riaan finished school and did national service. I later became the Scout Master of 10th Arcadia (1990 to 1992). So many memories and so happy to see 37th still going strong 👍🏻
